Austin Free Press (AFP) and Huston-Tillotson University are shaping the future of journalism by training and amplifying young voices of color in Austin. This groundbreaking partnership provides real-world experience, mentorship, and new perspectives that are often missing in traditional media.
As Austin’s only historically Black university, HT has long sought to establish a journalism program. Through this partnership, AFP is helping fill that gap – offering students college credit, financial support, and career-building opportunities – while serving an underserved community.
Led by HT English Department Chair Dr. Shawanda Stewart and AFP Executive Director and Editor in Chief Alberta Phillips – a veteran journalist and associate editor – this collaboration is more than just training; it’s a movement toward a more inclusive and representative news media.
